Hi, I'm Doug. I'm a composer of sacred music.

My focus is helping people deepen their faith and their worship through music, warm, enriching, spirit-filled music.

If you've read the story on my homepage about the priest in Warsaw who told me my music helped him pray, this page is the longer version of how I got there.

Changed me forever...

"We must compose for God!"

I earned my doctorate in Cincinnati, then went to Warsaw as a Fulbright Scholar for a post-graduate certificate at the Chopin University of Music, studying with Paweł Łukaszewski. I was, by my own description, a pompous little snob who composed for accolades.

One day I was sitting in the hall waiting for my lesson. Dr. Łukaszewski came down the hall, stopped in front of me, pointed his finger at me, and said his motto: "We must compose for God. Every note I compose is for God. Every note you compose must be for God."

He said it nearly every week. The Mass I wrote there, my Missa Musica Sacra, premiered on Polish national TV and radio. Afterward, a priest told me my music had helped him pray. From then on, I started to live that motto.

Now every note, chord, and musical decision I make aims to help the listener feel something that might bring them closer to God, instead of showing off.

More than ten years after I served as composer-in-residence at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Cincinnati, they still use my music every year. Their director has told me they can't have Holy Week without "Lord, Not My Feet Only" on Maundy Thursday, and they use "I Know That My Redeemer Liveth" regularly.

Finding the Sound

My first sacred music was hymn arrangements for violin and piano, written as an undergraduate. In graduate school I focused on secular music and came back to sacred music later.

When I came back, my music was clever and interesting, but it wasn't meaningful in a sacred, liturgical space. It was all about effect, or something new. I was a devout Christian, but I wasn't connecting what I felt in worship to what I wrote.

In graduate school I wrote secular choral works built around finding cool sounds, using South American texts and various languages. In Poland, with Łukaszewski, I wrote the Missa Musica Sacra. Every choice of notes and harmonies was meant to cultivate reverence for God and to seek after Him.

Here's how I test it. I have to be moved first. I listen for the moments that give me spiritual shivers, because others won't feel it if I don't. Then I try it on others and adjust. It also has to flow in the singers' voices and the players' hands. It doesn't have to be easy, but when it flows, musicians have room to express their feelings instead of worrying about whether they can play or sing it.

I write music that gives me the spiritual shivers. Once it does, I know others will feel it too.

What I do now...

My whole focus as a composer is to help others feel God in their lives. Deepen your worship with music written from a spiritual perspective. Music that communicates what can only be communicated on an unspoken level of the heart and soul.

My wife and I have six kids, and we all love to play and sing, at church and at home.

Official Biography

American composer Douglas Pew (b. 1980) is noted for his ability to strike at the root of the emotional world through his music, “with a showman’s touch and a poet’s soul, letting it take flight” (Jake Heggie, composer of Moby Dick). His music has been heralded as “stunning…magical” (Washington Times) and “sensual, other-worldly, expressive and showcasing a rich harmonic pallet, sure to connect with audiences, while saying something fresh, profound and meaningful” (The Pianist’s Craft, Vol. 2).

Pew’s sacred choral works have been commissioned and premiered internationally, including his Missa Musica Sacra, commissioned and premiered by the Warsaw-Praga Cathedral Choir in Poland, which received 2nd prize in the Musica Sacra Nova International Choral Composition Competition. His 1-hour chamber opera Penny premiered with Washington National Opera at the John F. Kennedy Center to wide acclaim: “Penny simply works, not because we should like it, but because it has a story to tell” (Washington Post).

Douglas has received multiple additional awards including a Barlow Endowment commission, 1st prize in the 2009 SCI/ASCAP Student Composers Commission Competition, the ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composers Award, the Susan and Ford Schumann Fellowship at the Aspen Music Festival, and a prize from the Tangeman Sacred Music Center.

Douglas holds Masters and Doctoral degrees from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, as well as a post-graduate certificate from the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, Poland, where he studied with internationally revered composer Paweł Łukaszewski as a Fulbright Scholar. Douglas served as composer-in-residence at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Cincinnati, OH, and is active as a conductor, vocalist, author, and entrepreneur. Dr. Craig Jessop

Tabernacle Choir, former director.

"In Douglas Pew we have a fresh new voice in contemporary sacred music. His craftsmanship in the art of composition is readily demonstrated in his outstanding cantatas, hymns, solo arias, and choruses. His writing for voices is filled with sensitivity and beauty, always complementing the spirit of the text. We have much to look forward to in the future compositional output of this exciting American composer."

Jake Heggie
Composer (Moby Dick, Great Scott)

"Douglas Pew succeeded with a moving, touching, funny, and meaningful piece called, 'A Game of Hearts.' Not only did the opera work as theater, Doug went to the root of the emotional world of the opera and wrote music that illuminated the characters and situation with a showman's touch and poet's soul. He let it take flight."

Dr. Carlton Monroe
St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Cincinnati

"Doug's sacred music is deeply spiritual. It arises not simply from a composer's desire to express themselves, but from a more profound need to express truth. It walks the fine, beautiful line between the perfection of the divine and the limits of human spirituality to that magical point where the veil between them grows thin. Performing Doug's sacred music is an exercise for the heart and a feast for the soul."
